My first 70.3 and the most inspirational finish!

Well let me start by saying it was so HARD and so FUN!!  The day was crazy with a 2 pm start, it was very unique but it worked out well!  I was in the 5th wave that started at 2:20pm.  I was feeling great, 2 buoys down and the wave behind me hadn’t started yet, YES!  I got to the first red turn buoy, cruised around it and hit white caps, seriously?!?!  Kayaks and waverunners were screaming across the water pulling people out, it was a little scary!  I just kept my head down and told myself that I could do it and that I could check where I was going every 25 strokes, it felt like I was going nowhere but kept at it, finally I got to turn again, and again and again, then it was the straight a way to the swim finish…BRUTAL, it was like a mass start, all knees and elbows as we funneled into a small boat launch, I have no idea what my time is at this point and didn’t care, I am cruising into transition tired and hungry!

7 minutes 30 seconds, one episode of almost public nudity, two gels and 2 shot blocks later I am crossing the dam and feeling darn good!  10 minutes into the ride it starts to rain, HARD!  I am careful, probably slower than I needed to be but didn’t want to crash; I crossed plywood that was covering cattle grates and started the "significant climb" up to the birds of prey sanctuary, this is when I see lightening and hear a very large thunder clap, just as I am hitting the highest point of the climb, no worries there is an aid station and I am ready for some Gatorade!

The rest of the bike is wet and slow and uneventful, the thunder and lightening gave me something to think about, I would count one one-thousand, two one-thousand between the lightening and thunder and it was a wonderful distraction to being wet and cold.  The last 6 miles tested me, I almost cried 2 or 3 times, I knew I could do it, it was just tough.

I hit T2 and the same gal that was with me in T1 was right there, it was awesome!  We commiserated about the weather, she used my almost public nudity technique to change her clothes, we rung out our socks and headed out on the run.  I was amazed by how great my legs felt, my feet on the other hand were so cold it felt like I was running on stumps!  At the first aid station I had two cups of hot soup and by the time I hit mile 3 I could feel my feet.  It was a double lap course and people were still pretty serious at that point, I made a few friends along the way but tried to stay focused as my feet started to hurt.  I passed my friend as she was on her second lap and I was finishing my first, she was struggling a bit.  I was doing pretty good until I hit the area where I could see and hear JP, I kind of lost it, stopped and cried a little, he gave me a pep talk, it was what I needed and I found my groove again, I pulled my jelly beans out and told myself that I couldn’t eat them until mile 9, oh how I was looking forward to mile 9!  I hit mile 9 eat my jelly beans and see my sister, YEA she made the bike cut off!  We hug and she tells me that she doesn’t have a second to spare she only made the cut off by a minute and a half and has to keep going, I tell her to channel gramps, I know she will make it, I keep running.  It is pretty fun at this point because everybody is in the same boat, all we want to do it finish, it is so positive and encouraging and the volunteers are amazing!  My feet hurt and I am eyeing the Boise river as it rushes past me and I have a few moments where I think it would be a good idea to go down to the river, take my shoes off and just put my feet in the water, luckily I am still sane and realize this is not a good idea, but oh it sounded tempting!

Finally I see the 12 mile marker and know that I am going to make it, I come around the corner, see college friends, the yell "nice skort" and give me the push I need to bring it home, the crowd is awesome! I cross the mat, look up 7:30:10, woo hoo!  They give me my medal and my finishers hat, take my picture and hand me off to JP who gives me the biggest hug!  I honestly felt like I couldn’t breathe as I cried and hugged him, it felt so good!  All my friends who finished before me were there, it was AWESOME!!

I head in for my post race massage, short but amazing.  I come out of the massage room and there is 15 minutes until the end of the race, my sister isn’t in yet and her husband is not answering his phone, this is serious!  I am no longer tired or sore I just need to find her as we watch the minutes tick away 4 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes, 1 minute and then I see her husband come around the corner and then I see her, she has 40 seconds to sprint the straightaway!  The announcer says "I don’t normally say this, but if you are going to make it you better get going, come on everybody bring her in…" the crowd is screaming, I am screaming, her husband is screaming, DIG DEEP, DIG DEEP, CHANNEL GRANDPA, I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT, RUN, RUN, RUN!!  She hits the timing mat, they announce her her name and that she is the last official finisher of the day with ZERO seconds to spare.  We are all crying, the volunteers are crying, strangers are congratulating her, her husband is crying his eyes out and she has the world’s biggest smile on her face…It may have been the most amazing finish I have ever seen…the day was AWESOME, I couldn’t have scripted it better :-)
